RUBEE TUESDAY: Cucina Tagliani, Arboleda, EVO North Scottsdale, Citizen Public House, Donabe in W Scottsdale Hotel

A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.

Monday, January 8: Cucina Tagliani (Glendale). I spent the afternoon shopping with mom and we wrapped up our day at this family favorite (its scratch Italian menu has made Cucina Tagliani an Arizona institution for over 30 years). I usually get clams or spaghetti squash lasagna with Cucina Tagliani’s Dynamante pepperoncini sauce (photo on the left), but this time, I went for the baked spaghetti squash with Alfredo.

Tuesday, January 9: Arboleda (Scottsdale Quarter). I have three more spots to cross off for a cocktail assignment, and I always love a good excuse to visit Arboleda. Though I only had time for a cocktail this time, we have dinner reservations with friends in two weeks.

EVO (North Scottsdale). We’ve been to the original EVO in Old Town many times, but this was our first visit to the second location which opened in November.

Our quick meal (chicken piccata for me, chicken parm and Alfredo gnocchi for Ernesto) was so good, we made plans to return for a more leisurely dinner.

Wednesday, January 10: Citizen Public House (Old Town Scottsdale). This beloved restaurant known for its craft cocktails and sophisticated gastropub menu has been welcoming guests for over a decade. Our brief visit was a great reminder that we need to return more often - starting with dinner reservations next month.

Donabe (W Scottsdale). We were invited to check out Donabe when it first opened last year, but it took me until now to carve out some time. It was worth the wait! Donabe is a sophisticated Japanese steakhouse concept from Alliance Hospitality Group, who also own FLINT By Baltaire. We loved the cozy, sophisticated vibe, its tucked away location on the second floor WET Deck, the fantastic menu, and friendly service.

Once you find your way there, these are some of the dishes you should order: Kampachi sashimi with crispy potato threads, sliced jalapenos, and lemon-koji dressing…

… and Vietnamese Ribs with pickled banh mi vegetables; Lobster Roll with tobiko, Meyer lemon, and nasturtium leaves; specials like Ōra King salmon with truffles, ricotta, and capers (listen to Chef Gilberto Torres’ full description here); his namesake Handlebar Roll with lobster tempura. asparagus, A5 Wagyu, wasabi aioli, and caviar; Wagyu Hot Stone with shiso chimichurri and daikon-onion relish; and one of the best burgers in town with ground Wagyu, black truffle mayo, and aged white cheddar cheese on a Japanese milk bun (and we learned a great tip from our fab server - swap out the haystack potatoes for the togarashi fries).

I was just as impressed with the beverage program, overseen by manager Randy Kuang: A Fuji Spritz for me (lychee, strawberry, Aperol yuzu, soda, and prosecco), a Japanese Old-Fashioned for Ernesto (Toki Japanese whiskey, orgeat, and toasted almond bitters), and the phenomenal off-menu nori cocktail below as a finale. Tuesday, January 2: The Vig Park West (Peoria). We were in the area running errands, so it was the perfect chance to finally visit this location, which opened in May (read more here). As we’ve experienced at other Vigs, we loved the casual, comfortable vibe, friendly service, and executive chef Jeremy Pacheco’s menu that highlights local ingredients. Our impromptu dinner included the Brussels sprouts salad with roasted squash, candied cashews, and bacon for me, and the French Dip for Ernesto:

Wednesday, January 3: Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion (Phoenix). It’s no secret that I think that James Beard award-winning Chef Christopher Gross helms one of the best restaurants in the country, and our latest visit was just another confirmation. This time, we had reservations to enjoy the three-course Classics menu served on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (a ten-course tasting menu is offered Thursday through Saturday - see a video of our anniversary dinner here).

Be sure to enjoy some craft cocktails, which are just as impressive as the food and the wine list.

I love savory components in my cocktails, so started with Foie Gras (foie gras-washed rum, aged lavender syrup, and bitters) and ended with Cep Mushroom (Del Bac whiskey, vermut blanc, Amer Picon, mushrom broth).

I’ll be sharing a video with more from our visit, but for my three courses, I chose Christopher’s signature foie gras terrine, an incredible Two Wash Ranch guinea hen (I added optional shaved white truffles), and cognac baba, a dessert created for last year’s Louis XIII Remy Martin dinner.

We were also spoiled with bonus desserts, including this luxurious Saint-André cheese and its clever look-alike dessert counterpart.

Thursday, January 4: Phở Tan Thanh (Peoria). We spent the afternoon with my parents shopping at Lee Lee’s market and then an early dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant inside the store.

Our spread included three of my favorite Vietnamese dishes: chả giò (Vietnamese spring rolls), bánh xèo (a crispy rice flour crepe stuffed with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts), and bánh hỏi thịt heo quay (BBQ pork served with rice noodle squares, lettuce, herbs, and rice paper to make your own rolls).

Friday, January 5: Casa Filipina (Phoenix). I finally carved out time to return to my favorite Filipino spot, and it was so nice to see Tony and Tess again! In 2015, I wrote a comprehensive blog post which you can read here.

We ordered what have become four favorites: Lumpiang Shanghai (Filipino egg rolls), binagoongan (eggplant and pork belly with fermented shrimp paste), tortang talong (eggplant omelette), and chicken inasal (marinated chicken grilled and served with pancit and rice).

And because it had been so long since my last visit, I bought more than the usual treats to take home.

Chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies, ube cheesecake, baklava, macapuno/coconut tart, ensaymada (sweet bun), sapin-sapin (layered coconut and sticky rice cake), pan de sal (rolls), adobong mani (garlic fried peanuts), and atchara (pickled papaya relish):

Wednesday, December 27: Le Âme at The Global Ambassador (Phoenix). I headed back to Sam Fox’s gorgeous new hotel, The Global Ambassador (first visit here), this time for lunch with Meridith May, publisher and Editor-in-Chief of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines. On the way out, the croissants at Le Market were also too tempting to pass up (and were a treat for breakfast the next day).

I’m wrapping up my 2023 cocktail assignments for Experience Scottsdale, and Hermosa Inn was my next stop.

It was a beautiful afternoon to fall in love with these two killer cocktails: Tale of the G.O.A.T. (Suncliffe Gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, lemon, lime, rosemary syrup, and Fee bitters foam), and head bartender Victoria’s off-menu Eggnog Espresso Martini (homemade eggnog, Whistlepig Piggyback Rye, Torres Brandy, local Roc2 espresso, Kahlua, Creme de Cacao, and Bailey’s Irish Cream). Thursday, December 28: Ember steakhouse (We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort). My next SOMM Jourmal column features two of the superstars at We-Ko-Pa and Ember, one of our favorite restaurants as seen in past Rubee Tuesdays.

I was there to shoot photos of property executive chef Richard Pelz and advanced sommelier Dennis Payne, so, of course, had made reservations for dinner. Thank you to Chef Richard who spoiled us with amazing off-menu surprises such as “eggs and hash” with duck confit hash topped with an oozy egg and crispy duck tongues, and quail with veal sweetbreads, Madeira sauce, and Perigord truffles.

It was also nice to meet sous chef Austin, who treated us to a tableside baked Alaska. We’ll be back next month for a special wine dinner featuring Burgundy, France.

Friday, December 29: Valentine (Phoenix). High on my list of “places we need to visit more regularly” is Valentine, led by Chef Donald Hawk, a 2022 James Beard Award nominee.

Donnie is known for his distinctive menu (which landed Valentine on Esquire’s Best New Restaurant list) celebrating Arizona ingredients. My feast started with a G&T with a blend of Arizona gins and house elderflower tonic before diving into tempura BKW Farms mushrooms (details here), Chula Seaood oysters with Chinese chorizo butter, Fripper’s smoked bologna with mesquite pecan-chile honey and rosemary, smoked lamb egg rolls with prickly pear gochujang, and Rovey Dairy Farms ribeye with Ramona Farms tepary beans and tortillas brushed with huitlacoche butter.

We were thrilled to snag a table afterwards at one of our city’s best cocktail lounges - Valentine’s Bar 1912 (which I recently featured here in A Taste of AZ magazine),

You’ll want to explore co-owner Blaise’s signature drinks representing Arizona’s ecological biomes like my Grassland and Woodland below. And save room for the fantastic desserts by pastry chef Crystal (who was nominated for a James Beard Award this year) such as the best Basque cheesecake I’ve ever had and her sweet corn sundae with miso caramel, mimolette, and masa pizzelle (I’m obsessed!).

Thursday, December 21: B&B Cocktail Lounge (Old Town Scottsdale). Researching for a Spritz cocktail assignment for Experience Scottsdale, I stopped by B&B to sample a couple of their newest cocktails. A fun (and delicious!) shareable carafe coming to the "Make it a Party" cocktail menu in January is the Snap Sparkle Spritz with Jaya prosecco, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, gold glitter, and guests' choice of citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime, or lemon).

I will also be featuring the Hi Barbie Spritz made with Chandon sparkling rosé and soda water mixed with Lillet Blanc, vodka, and fresh watermelon juice. We had just as much fun at dinner, starting with the Charcuterie Tower and then sharing a juicy grilled Argentine beef filet from WorldClass and award-winning Devesa Beef. Of course, I had to end with a nightcap from their acclaimed whiskey list - thank you to Bailey who introduced me to of her favorites (and now mine!): Leopold Bros. Three Chamber Rye.

Friday, December 22: Talavera (Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale). I hadn’t been to Talavera in (sadly) three years, and wow! I am loving this latest menu with Chef de Cuisine Emmanuel Urban and his team.

And thank you to Beverage Manager Dean Cabeza, who surprised me with a special Negroni!

It was great to see Dave Fernandez, who knew us from prior visits and guided us with menu suggestions, including a fantastic tableside bone marrow steak tartare by Chef Eddy. Other outstanding highlights included an amuse of chia seed cracker with sweet potato and kumquat; croquettes with jamón Ibérico de bellota; gambas al ajillo; duck breast with duck jus reduction and sweet potato mille-feuille; Talavera paella with lobster, prawns, pork belly, mussels, clams, chicken, and chorizo; chocolate ring with hazelnut and white truffle ice cream; and smoked cheesecake.

Saturday, December 23: The Italian Daughter (North Scottsdale) When Chef Vittorio told me about some of the seafood dishes on the special holiday menu (including his award-winning clam chowder!), we had to book a reservation.

And I’m so glad I did. It was an incredible feast, with clams oreganata, the aforementioned clam chowder (which was so good, we ordered more to-go), fried lobster tails, swordfish involtini, and lobster oreganata with spaghetti guazzetto.

We were also treated to GM Gino’s special flaming coffee, and a sneak peek at two tableside desserts planned for New Year’s Eve - espresso crème brûlée and tiramisu. Click the photo below to watch my video reel of our wonderful night.

Thursday, December 14: Sel (Old Town Scottsdale). Sel, a personal favorite (one that I featured in my Phoenix Cooks book), introduced a lunch menu this year for the first time.

Celebrating something special? Splurge on caviar and Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. A casual get-together with friends? Check out the Korean short rib buns, carnitas tacos, or Sel Burger. How about a foodie luncheon? I loved my Malpeque oyster stew with truffle-potato puree, smoked trout roe (lead photo above), duck confit poutine, and Old Bay tuile and miso-marinated fish and chips with Tokyo street fries and tomatillo remoulade.

It’s now my go-to for lunch in Old Town! The menu is available 11 am-2:30 pm Tuesday through Friday.

Afterwards, I stopped in to two spots for a margarita assignment I’m working on - Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila and Prado at Omni at the Montelucia. Be on the look-out for my Experience Scottsdale feature.

Friday, December 14: Etta (Scottsdale Quarter). Our friend Matt Allen is now behind the stick in the dining room bar which opened up seating just a few weeks ago.

I first met Matt when he taught this cocktail class eight years ago, and I’ve been a huge fan of his cocktail skills ever since. Our evening started off with a Vieux Carre for my husband, and a fantastic Negroni for me with Campari, vermouth, rum, banana liqueur, and coffee beans.

To pair with Etta’s excellent cocktails, we dined on delicious House Foccacia with rosemary and black truffle-honey whipped ricotta; Bubbling Shrimp with ginger and cilantro; Wagyu Meatballs with Calabrian chile gremolata; and Cannoli Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Saturday, December 16: Kembara (JW Marriott Desert Ridge). I was so excited to introduce my parents to Chef Angelo Sosa and his new restaurant celebrating the flavors of Asia, especially since my mom is Vietnamese and we had lived in Thailand, where my brother was born.

Needless to say, they fell in love with both the restaurant and Chef Angelo himself (thank you Angelo for bringing mom into the kitchen - that was such a highlight for her!).

Don’t overlook the excellent craft cocktails named after books and Asian authors. Two favorites below: The Sympathizer (Akashi White Oak whisky, Genmaicha tea, toasted rice, and cherry wood smoke poured from a teapot) and The Joy Luck Club (a clarified punch with bourbon, rum, coconut milk, and yuzu).

Angelo chose some of his favorite dishes for us to try and what a feast! We all had different top three favorites (mine were the lamb spring rolls, chili crab, and rendang) but every dish was a winner. You can listen in to Angelo here describing some of the dishes.

Sunday, December 17: Morning Would (Scottsdale). Course is one of my favorite restaurants, and I had been wanting to get to its “immature sibling” Morning Would for Sunday Brunch.

The party-sized Spritz XL set the tone for a fun morning with our friends Lisa, aka Cocktail Maven, and her husband Gregg.

Wednesday, December 20: Krazy Cajun Seafood & Hibachi (Phoenix). It’s alway fun to discover a new spot, especially when our friends Jason and Tawnya of CRUjiente Tacos introduce us to one of their favorites!

Thursday, December 21: Marcellino’s Ristorante (Old Town Scottsdale). I’m working on a Scottsdale Aperol Spritz round-up, so of course I had to include Marcellino’s, which celebrated 20 years in 2023. Bonus: Spending time chatting with owners Sima and Chef Marcellino Verzino.

We didn’t have time to have a full dinner but shared antipasti, Marcellino’s signature Polenta e Funghi (recipe is in my Phoenix Cooks cookbook!), and a fabulous special of grilled WorldClass calamari.

Thursday, November 30: VAI Resort (Glendale). In 2022 when construction began, I was invited to take a hard-hat tour of VAI resort, a 60-acre project that will become Arizona's largest daylife, nightlife, and entertainment destination (click the photo below for more details).

On Thursday, I was invited to see the latest progress on VAI Amphitheater, a $40 million world-class venue offering the ultimate concert experience - you’ll actually be able to watch the show from special tables at its signature restaurant, your room balcony, and VIP skyboxes. I’ll be posting any news I receive here on the website, so be sure to check back for updates!

That night, we attended the Grand Opening Media Event for Kembara at at JW Marriott Desert Ridge resort, Chef Angelo Sosa’s highly-anticipated Asian restaurant. This is Sosa’s second Arizona restauant, with his first being Southwestern-inspired Tia Carmen (you can read my SOMM Journal feature here).

Kembara is an ode to Chef Sosa’s love of Asian cuisine and extensive time spent in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Get all the details at THIS LINK (and check back for more when I return next week for dinner!).

Friday, December 1: The Global Ambassador Hotel (Phoenix). It was big news in 2021 when it was announced that renowned restaurateur Sam Fox was entering the luxury hotelier arena, and, to no one’s surprise, the property is stunning. We were invited to experience Le Âme, the hotel’s sophisticated Parisian steakhouse, and after-dinner drinks in the beautiful lobby bar - click the photo below to see a video reel of our first visit.

Friday, December 8: La Hacienda (Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort). We try to get together with Meridith May and her husband Bill Brandel, owners of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines, at least once a month, and this time our destination was La Hacienda at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Thank you to the team for making their first visit so special!

Monday, December 11: Arizona Biltmore resort (Phoenix). I fell in love with this gorgeous property and its historic legacy on my first visit, and it still remains one of my favorite resorts.

Helmed by executive chef Daniel Weber, their culinary program is also noteworthy (see my recent DAOU wine dinner experience here), and I LOVE the Champagne and Caviar “pop-up” lounge they’ve created for the holidays. Through January 2, guests can enjoy Petrossian caviar and their favorite champagne (or vodka) every day from 11:30 am to 9 pm (10 pm on weekends), with a lunch menu available 11:30 to 2 pm. Wednesday, December 13: Bar Cena (Scottsdale). We were invited to attend a media dinner to explore chef-owner Dom Ruggiero’s menu and I couldn’t have been more excited as I’m a big fan of both Hush, his inaugural restaurant, and Dom's talents (you can find two of his recipes in my Phoenix Cooks cookbook). Bar Cena is now on my list of “Best Restaurants I Visited in 2023” (a work in progress!), and these are some of my must-orders: Popovers with cacio pepe butter, muffuletta croquettes, steak tartare, cucumber salad with whipped tofu and chili crunch, frisée salad, crispy potato pave with rouille, pate en croute, wild mushroom Bolognese, scallops with bacon and creamed corn, and veal osso buco. And bonus - excellent craft cocktails too.

Afterwards, I stopped by Campo Italian to snap some photos for an Experience Scottsdale assignment, like this margarita with Chelly, a locally-made lemon liqueur, and semolina-dusted crispy WorldClass Argentine calamari.

Monday, November 20: Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows (Scottsdale). We were invited to celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary at this gorgeous 23-acre resort with Camelback Mountain views.

While we had visited its signature restaurant, Weft & Warp, many times over the years, it was the first time staying overnight in one of their luxurious mid-century modern bungalows.

It was also a treat to meet the new culinary and beverage team, including executive chef Sammy DeMarco (read all about this talented chef HERE) and beverage director Ash Iraqui.

Wednesday, November 22: Grey Hen at Century Grand (Phoenix). We were invited to try the new cocktails at this award-winning cocktail emporium (check out a past podcast here on YouTube with co-owners Kailee and Jason Asher).

If I had to pick a favorite, it might have to be the Coconut Whiskey Highball that uses a centrifuge to clarify the strawberries and lemons, but these four were all winners: 

  • Coconut Whiskey Highball (Toasted Coconut-Infused Toki Japanese Whiskey, Briottet Bergamot, Clarified Strawberry and Lemon, Bison Grass, Grapefruit Oils)

  • The Mapmaker’s Folly  (Patron Sherry Cask Añejo Tequila, Banana-infused Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, Sauternes, East India Sherry, Yuzu, Peach, Madras Curry, Palo Santo, Cinnamon, Orange Oils)

  • Paper Plane (Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, Amaro Nonio, Aperol, Lemon)

  • Kentucky Buck (Knob Creek 100 Proof Bourbon, Coruba Jamaican Rum, Ginger, Ancho Chile, Cacao Nib, Lemon)

Having worked up an appetite, we were off to CRUjiente Tacos, who had also launched some new cocktails (and menu items).

If you’re headed to CRU, in addition to their award-winning margaritas, you’ll want to order these two fantastic new libations: Red Wedding with bourbon, hopped honey, strawberry, ginger, anise, and lemon juice, and Luck Be a Lady with mezcal, creme de violette, Maraschino cherry liqueur, lemon, and lavender bitters.

Chef Rich also introduced us to new menu items, like this grilled WorldClass Ibérico pork loin seasoned with jalapeño, cilantro, garlic, and cumin served with mole verde, charred onions, and black beans. It was so incredibly juicy and flavorful, that I had to order another!

Monday, November 27: Sunny’s Lounge/Say Less (Phoenix). In September, the Barter & Shake team of Century Grand opened Sunny's Lounge in the former Shady's, the beloved dive bar on Indian School Road.

We had made plans with our friends Kristy of Where Should We Eat and her husband Mike, and The Cocktail Maven and her husband Gregg. Serendipitously, we happened to plan our triple date for a night when Ashley Cibor was guest bartending with a special menu. Such a fun night! And bonus - running into owner Jason Asher, chef Peter McQuaid of Cala, and beverage director Jordan Chandler of Trevor’s.

After some great cocktails and a round of Ashley’s Grasshopper shots, we headed to Avanti, an old-school Italian favorite.

Tuesday, November 28: Turquoise Wine Bar (Glendale). We had been meaning to get together with our friends Travis and Tara, and Travis chose the perfect spot.

This wine bar and bottle shop is such a great addition to the West Valley wine scene, and we already have plans to return for a tasting. Be sure to check out this event calendar for their fun schedule of events that include live music, sip and paint classes, and special winemaker tastings.

Wednesday, June 29: Restaurant Progress (Melrose District). Progress had been on my list since it opened back in 2017, and it was worth the wait, especially in the company of our friends Joe and Cindy Johnston, founders of Agritopia and Epicenter.

Although it took me far too long to discover this Phoenix favorite for myself, it was easy to see why this is such a beloved neighborhood favorite - loved the warm and cozy vibe, excellent cocktails, delicious small plates menu, and friendly service.

Wednesday, November 15: Arboleda (Scottsdale Quarter). Arboleda is one of our favorites, so when we were invited to attend their first wine dinner, there was no hesitation. The evening featured Emilio Moro winery from Ribera Del Duero in Spain with special guest Mario Moro.

Our main course was WorldClass Argentine ribeye with Calabrian chile butter, duck fat roasted potatoes and charred scallion - click the photo below to watch my video reel for a recap of our wonderful night.

Thursday, November 16: Hermosa Inn (Paradise Valley). We were invited to a party commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Lon Megarees' "The Last Drop from His Stetson" painting. The celebration included branded Stetson leather luggage tags, unveiling of the Inn’s gorgeous @pendletonwm blankets, a 56-year-old Last Drop whisky, and delicious bites from the new executive chef, Brian Peterson, whom I first met at the Arizona Biltmore,

Afterwards, we joined our friends Sean and Nicole Minor of Sean Minor Wines, who just happened to be in town and staying at the Hermosa Inn, for dinner at Lon’s.

Friday, November 17: Urban Agave (Glendale). Another new spot comes to our neighborhood! We swung by the launch party for Urban Agave, owned by Sky Restaurant Concepts, owners of Squid Ink Sushi in Peoria and Highball Cocktail Bar in downtown Phoenix. We’ll be back to check it out for lunch or Happy Hour.

Afterwards, we hit our favorite West Valley Chinese restaurant, D&Y Chinese in Glendale, where I ordered favorites like qing chao dou miao, or stir-fried pea tendrils with garlic, and salt and pepper pork chop (and my husband’s usual order of Westlake soup, pork fried rice, and shrimp in lobster sauce).

Sunday, November 19: The Stetson Social (Peoria). We’d been looking forward to the opening of this new spot by our friend, restaurateur Mario Rana of Osteria Mia, and then it took us four months to finally carve out time for a visit. We love having a neighborhood wine bar serving global small plates so close to our house, and already have plans to return with mom and dad.

Highlights included muhammara (roasted red pepper and walnut dip), Spanish croquettes with jamón Serrano, and the double cheese burger.

Friday, November 3: Wrigley Mansion (Phoenix). The wonderful folks from Temecula Winegrowers Association were back in town (I first met Devin Parr and the team here), and this time they hosted our group of wine and travel writers at the beautiful Wrigley Mansion.

Our private event began with sabering a bottle of bubbly before a wine tasting led by Samantha Capaldi of Samantha Sommelier, passed hors d'oeuvres with wine and bubbly, and this incredible tasting menu.

Afterwards, I joined the team for a kitchen tour led by David Brito, executive chef of Geordie's at Wrigley Mansion, and chef Vinh Nguyen, before a nightcap in Jamie’s Wine Bar.

Temecula is just a short 90-minute flight from Phoenix, and I fell in love with its excellent wines, beautiful tasting rooms, and welcoming community when I visited this past summer. I'm currently working on a few stories to spotlight the wineries, winemakers, restaurants, and activities, but for now, you can get a glimpse through my video reel - just click the photo below.

Saturday, November 4: PYRO Phoenix (The Grove). We were invited for a special Friends & Family preview before its official grand opening and were so impressed with everything about this stylish new spot - from the sleek decor to the delicious menu and warm and friendly service on such a busy night. The first restaurant to open at The Grove, a $400 million mixed-use development at 44th Street and Camelback Road, PYRO was brought to Phoenix by the Flagship Restaurant Group (founded in Omaha with 30+ restaurants across the country). PYRO introduces a brand-new concept to their stable of eateries - a chic Japanese bistro experience with a focus on live-fire and wood-grilled dishes.

We started with excellent cocktails - an Old Fashioned with plum wine and lapsang souchong black tea for my husband, and a Negroni (naturally) with Japanese gin and UME plum liqueur for me.

I would order any of these PYRO Phoenix dishes again, with my top three favorites being Ibérico pork skewers with pickled daikon and yuzu aioli, Dungeness crab noodles with Meyer lemon, crème fraîche, and smoked trout roe, and Branzino with pickled ginger shoots, Tokyo turnip & herb salad, and lemon-chili vinaigrette.

Monday, November 6: Prime at Gila River Resort and Casino - Wild Horse Pass (Chandler). Once again, the culinary and beverage team knocked it out of the park. This time, we were invited to experience Chef Michael Dei Maggi’s exquisite culinary pairings with Seven Apart, a Sonoma winery founded by Scottsdale resident Don Dady. Count me in as a new fan!

And, as always, no visit to Prime is complete without retiring to the bar to experience Camille’s cocktail talents.

Wednesday, November 8: Mora Italian (Phoenix). On Wednesday, we were invited to attend Scott Conant’s special autumnal dining experience, a one-night-only event featuring a special menu that showcased the fall flavors of pumpkin and squash.

Friday, October 27: Bourbon & Bones Chophouse (Peoria). Back to our neighborhood Bourbon & Bones for old favorites (like beef carpaccio, French onion soup, filet with cheesy potatoes and creamed spinach) and new (fried pesto shrimp and ceviche).

Monday, October 30: Paul Martin’s American Grill (Scottsdale). Though the Scottsdale location of this steakhouse owned by Paul Fleming (developer of restaurants such as PF Chang’s, Fleming’s, and Pei Wei), has been around for more a decade, it was our first time. Thank you to the team for inviting us!

It’s easy to see why it’s so popular - cozy, warm vibe, friendly service, and a scratch seasonal menu featuring sustainable seafood and signature steaks grilled over mesquite wood. My top three favorites? Salt & pepper shrimp with pesto aioli, cheddar biscuits with thyme-honey butter, and the juicy blackened ribeye.

Wednesday, November 1: Lom Wong (downtown Phoenix). Mom and dad were craving Thai food so we were off to award-winning Lom Wong for another fantastic experience.

Our feast included:

  • Tom Yum Haeng Sen Yai (stir-fried wide rice noodles,WorldClass langoustines, tomatoes, straw mushrooms, and tom yum sauce)

  • Gai Tawt Won Pen (Won Pen's fried chicken)

  • Yam Mamuang Boran (green mango salad with shrimp and coconut cream)

  • Sai Ua Nam Prik Noom (charcoal-grilled Northern Thai sausage)

  • Bamee Haeng Mu Dang (egg noodles with char siu, bok choy, and crispy wontons)

  • Kaeng Phet Charinda (beef shank curry with makheua eggplantl)

  • Tom Yum and Roselle Creme Brulee

Thursday, November 2: Arboleda (Scottsdale Quarter). We were invited to a VIP Media Event to kick off patio season at Arboleda. If you’re caught up on my Rubee Tuesdays, you’ll see that I’ve mentioned Arboleda as a personal favorite many times, and now you’ll want to add it to your “best outdoor dining” list!

Heritage at Sportsman’s Park

Thursday, October 5: Heritage at Sportsman’s Park (Glendale). We were invited to the Heritage Showcase as an introduction to this three-floor event venue next to State Farm Stadium. The first floor offers a beer garden, patio and adjacent Great Lawn, while the third floor is perfect for rooftop events.

Our gathering on the second floor treated us to an al fresco affair featuring cocktails and bites by local producers and chefs, curated by Insignia Event Services.

The Great Lawn is also home to Heritage Night Market, which takes place on the first and third Thursdays of the month. I checked it out on my way out and fell in love with Hoyo’s East African Cuisine, with a fantastic beef sambosa, chicken curry and rice, and Somalian hot sauce.

Friday, October 6: Bourbon & Bones Chophouse (Peoria). We were thrilled when this location of Bourbon & Bones opened in July less than 10 minutes from our house.

Our first experience was just as stellar as our visits to the original in Scottsdale, and before we left, we had made another reservation for next month.

Sunday, October 8: JW Marriott Camelback Inn (Paradise Valley). We were invited to the inaugural Cocktail Confidential class at Lincoln Steakhouse - what a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Monday, October 9: Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey (Melrose District). For my latest A Taste of AZ podcast as guest host with co-host Luke Irvin, we joined executive chef Chris Wolfe and beverage manager Joshua Martinez of Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey.

Afterwards. we headed to Gallo Blanco Cafe in downtown Phoenix for two dishes that we order every time - Envuelto (al pastor folded inside of melted asadero with fresh pineapple) for me and Huevos Rancheros for my husband Ernesto.

Thursday, September 28: Federal American Grille (North Scottsdale). We were invited to attend this fun (and delicious) Basil-Hayden cocktail dinner, a perfect excuse to check out the first location of Houston’s Federal American Grill outside of Texas.

As Basil-Hayden has been named the official American whiskey of the U.S. Michelin Guide, we were treated to excellent cocktails paired with exclusive Michelin chef recipes.

It was also a pleasure to meet our friendly host, Federal American Grill Operating Partner Steve Parker. We’ll be back to explore the menu!

Friday, September 29: Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria (Cottonwood). We joined fellow guests for a private ribbon-cutting and after-party to celebrate the opening of Maynard James Keenan’s newest, and most beautiful, tasting room. I’ll be sharing more on my weekend in Cottonwood in a future Travel feature, but for now, click the photo below to watch my video reel.

Monday, October 2: J.T. Prime (Old Town Scottsdale). We were overdue for a visit to this Old Town gem, so when GM Marcos told me we had to check out the secret Happy Hour menu, we made plans for a visit. We happened to be the first to order off of the October menu (Black Widow for me and Nightmare on Bourbon Street for my husband). The menu changes monthly but you’ll have to visit between 3-5 pm and ask for the secret menu.

Of course, we also stayed for dinner for some of our favorites dishes including beef carpaccio, Del Mar Duo with octopus and jumbo tiger shrimp, short rib ravioli with gorgonzola cream sauce, Prime New York strip, and sea bass.

Tuesday, October 3: The Herb Box (North Scottsdale). We were invited to the Herb Box and chose this location as I had never been. What a great spot to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon. And bonus! I had a chance to check out two brand-new fall cocktails - Pumpkin Pie Martini and Apple Crisp Cider.

Wednesday, October 4: Omni Tempe at ASU (downtown Tempe). It was our first time at this beautiful Tempe hotel and it was impressive! We had been invited to stay and experience its amenities, including the lobby Neighborhood Services Bar + Restaurant and rooftop Lucero, along with a hotel tour. This will be another special spot I will feature in my Travel section, but for now, you can watch my video reel by clicking the rooftop photo below:

Thursday, August 31: Elliott’s Steakhouse (downtown Chandler). This swanky steakhouse set in a 1912 theater is the newest addition to the team who introduced The Brickyard Downtown and The Hidden House to Chandler. It’s all the buzz and I can see why - we had a fabulous first-time experience with Meridith May and her husband Bill Brandel, owners and publishers of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines. Look for my interview with Director of Operations Michael Regan in the February issue of SOMM Journal.

Friday, September 1: Anhelo (downtown Phoenix). As you can see from past recaps, Anhelo is a personal favorite. This time we joined WorldClass owner John Bergman and his team for another fantastic evening.

Wednesday, September 6: Fat Ox (Scottsdale). We were overdue for a visit to this modern Italian steakhouse, and an interview with Beverage Director Christiaan Röllich was a perfect excuse. Look for my feature in the January issue of Tasting Panel magazine.

Friday, September 8: Famiglia (Scottsdale). When I saw Famiglia’s Arizona Restaurant Week menu on our last visit, I had to book a reservation.

My delicious feast included the Vesper Martini and wine pairings with Bangs Island mussels, slow-roasted porchetta, and pumpkin cannolo, while my husband opted for the prosciutto and melon appetizer with cacio pepe off the regular menu.

Saturday, September 9: Pa’La Downtown (downtown Phoenix). Our second stop for Arizona Restaurant Week was another favorite.

My husband ordered off the regular menu (hummus and WorldClass presa, a special cut of Iberico pork), while I chose the warm cabbage Caesar salad and the WorldClass Iberico ribs above with Japanese sweet potatoes (along with GM Gilles’ wine pairings). We were also spoiled with a dessert sampler. Thank you Pa’La!

Tuesday, September 12: Atlas Wines (Scottsdale). We spent the afternoon hitting a few spots in Old Town Scottsdale. First up: A wine tasting featuring The Hilt Estate, Jonata, and The Paring.

Rounding out the day, assignments for Experience Scottsdale brought me next to Cala at The Senna House hotel and Sel.

Friday, August 25: Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room (Old Town Scottsdale). A Scottsdale City Lifestyle assignment on dishes using local honey brought me to one of my favorite chefs - Steve Zimmerman.

We were treated to an array of delicious dishes from this talented culinary star - some of which you can read about in the digital issue at this link (page 25), and others that were chalkboard specials.

And I was thrilled to be one of the first to try the new line of naturally-flavored Queen B sparkling meads (lavender, rose petal, jasmine, and bergamot)!

For dinner that night, we were off to Jade Palace (North Scottsdale). Locally-owned Tequila Corrido was the guest of honor at their first cocktail dinner featuring GM Roman Kettler’s excellent cocktails.

Sunday, August 27: Osteria Mia (North Phoenix). We had family visiting from Vegas, so we treated them to dinner at one of our neighborhood favorites.

Monday, August 28: Tia Carmen (JW Marriott Desert Ridge). The SOMM Journal gathered some of Arizona's finest wine and beverage professionals at Tia Carmen for a Gavi Masterclass. The first stop on the Gavi World Tour, it was a delicious deep dive into this Italian white varietal. Tuesday, August 29: The Rose Garden (Downtown Phoenix). We had a media sneak peek of the new Sur La Bar mixology class that officially launches September 20. For all the details, check out my video by clicking the photo of Trey Biven below:

Afterwards, we were off to celebrate Lauren Allen Culinary Events at their rebrand launch party at The Royal View House, a luxurious 8,600-square-foot home on a 1-acre estate. Coincidentally, I had been to this beautiful property before as it is the home of one of the co-founders of WorldClass, who now rents it out as a stunning venue.

Lauren Allen is known for her exceptional private dinners and events, and her launch party was another fabulous example. Congratulations Lauren!

Wednesday, August 30: Anhelo (downtown Phoenix). We’ve been back to Anhelo recently, but not for a full tasting menu experience. In fact, the last time we had made a reservation to do so, it was our anniversary last November and we had to cancel. We were blown away when we walked in and chef-owner Ivan had closed the restaurant just for us and created a special re-do Anniversary Dinner with this spectacular custom menu.

Needless to say, Anhelo, which has been a long-time favorite, now holds a special place in our hearts. Thank you to Ivan and his team for spoiling us with a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Wednesday, August 23: Cafe Monarch (Old Town Scottsdale). I had made special arrangements with Ben Wald, Executive Chef of both Cafe Monarch and Reserve, for a Scottsdale City Lifestyle Magazine assignment. Keep an eye out for the Food issue to see what he created!

That night, we had reservations at Ember at We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort (Fountain Hills). I was already a fan of sommelier Dennis Payne, Chef Richard Pelz, and the team when we recorded this Taste of AZ podcast, but during our chat, I learned about their sold-out wine dinners. Since then, we’ve tried to attend every one.

Ember recently received Wine Spectator Magazine’s Best of Award of Excellence for the third year in a row, so it’s no surprise that their wine dinners are outstanding. This time, they welcomed Frias Family Vineyard of Napa Valley and special guest Fernando Frias for an unforgettable evening celebrating these exceptional Napa wines.

Thursday, August 24: The Mission Kierland (North Scottsdale). Acclaimed mixologist Christian Röllich is another podcast guest we’ve had on A Taste of AZ, where he told us about his new position as Beverage Director for Matt Carter’s stable of restaurants.

Röllich’s first menu overhaul was for Fat Ox, and now he’s done the same at The Mission, where we had a chance to sample some of his stellar cocktails, including: A welcome mamajuana (rum infused with herbs, roots, and spices, red wine, and honey); Rio Naranja (tequila, coconut, ginger, lemongrass and yuzu), Diosa Verde (tequila, arugula and cucumber); Little Tree (vodka, passion fruit, sarsparilla and turmeric); Chicha Sour (Pisco and chicha morada, a Peruvian purple corn drink), Mission Martini (Panamanian rum, honey, cinnamon and espresso); and Archbishop (bourbon and mole orgeat).

Since we were so close to Famiglia, we wrapped up our evening at this hidden secret. This Italian gem owned by the talented duo of Sommelier Broc Chavez and Executive Chef Richard Rangel is one of my top restaurant recommendations. While it might fly under the radar, Famiglia is the kind of place that deserves more buzz and popularity, thanks to its warm, comfortable vibe and sophisticated Italian menu.

Yet another fantastic meal - this time, beet salad with gorgonzola, candied pecans, apples, and citrus, Calabrian cappelletti with ricotta, eggplant, and brown butter, and garganelli with braised chicken, peas, mascarpone, and lemon sauce. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we made reservations to return in two weeks for Arizona Restaurant Week.

Sunday, August 13 - Thursday, August 17: Las Vegas. For a SOMM Journal assignment, I headed to Vegas to cover a Roco Winery dinner at Chinglish. Look for my recap in the December issue!

We decided to add on some extra days, checking into the Park MGM for the first time. I’ll be posting more photos and details in the Travel section, but our dining highlights included La La Noodle, Eataly, and Ferrarro’s Ristorante….

Friday, August 18: Celebrity Chef Dinner at Hotel Valley Ho. The finale of the resort’s summer Sip + Shop market series was a special dinner featuring James Beard award-nominated chefs Rene “Chito” Andrade and Beau MacMillan.

Monday, August 7: Paradise Valley Burger (Phoenix). We love Brett Shapiro’s inventive burgers, and we’re not the only ones. The restaurant has racked up awards such as best burger in Arizona by the Travel Channel and Best Burger Joint by PHOENIX magazine, and has been featured on popular TV shows such as Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Man vs Food.

One of Guy Fieri’s favorites was my husband’s order on this visit: Country Fried Burger with jalapeno-thyme cream gravy, lettuce, tomato, and crispy fried onions on a griddled brioche bun.

If you follow PVB on Instagram, you’ll know that in addition to the inventive mainstays on the menu, you’ll also be tempted by the creative specials, as I was. In fact, I had to order both! The Back to School Burger with smoked peanut butter, strawberry-habanero jelly, smoked mozzarella, bacon, and crispy onions on crustless white bread and Nach'yo Grilled Cheese with housemade cool ranch chips, tequila cheese sauce, taco beef, serrano chiles, pico de gallo, and pickled onion served over a grilled cheese sandwich.

I’ve also included some past favorites:

Friday, August 11: Cool Dining in the Wine Cellar at Hermosa Inn. From June to September, Thursday through Sunday nights, guests can reserve a table for a special five-course tasting menu that changes weekly. When we heard this week’s was going to feature WorldClass Argentine black truffles, we had to make a reservation.

Wow! This turned out to be the best wine cellar dinner we’ve attended yet.

Executive chef Alejandro Martinez remarked that the aroma and flavor of these Argentine truffles rivaled those from Périgord, France, and I had to agree. From the amuse of sweet potato medallion with quail egg and truffles to the sugared doughnut stuffed with raspberry-truffle-cocoa nib jam, the entire experience was spectacular.

Our decadent night was not over yet, however, as we had been invited to the launch of Final Course at Weft & Warp at Andaz resort, a fantastic four-course dessert tasting menu by executive pastry chef Morgan Malzahn paired with Beverage Director Sergio Campos’ wonderful cocktails and wine pairings.

Friday, August 4: Bobby-Q BBQ (Phoenix). I couldn't recall my most recent visit to this place (the last time I went to a Bobby-Q was at the Biltmore location), but it’s one of my dad's favorite spots, and I’ll be bringing my parents back pronto! (You can also watch my video reel here).

While the picturesque brick-walled patio with its corner fountain is as inviting as ever, the interior has almost doubled in size. The side bar has been converted to a second dining room, making it an ideal location for large parties and private events.

Of course, there’s award-winning BBQ, but I also discovered a great new cocktail list (like my Passion Fruit Mai Tai to wash down smoked chicken wings), daily specials like Fish Fry Friday, and creamy caramel pecan cheesecake.

I’m already planning to return on a Sunday afternoon with mom and dad.

Saturday, August 5: PHOENIX magazine Best Fest. This is the second year for this fun food festival hosted by PHOENIX magazine to celebrate the people and businesses in the magazine's annual Best of Valley issue. Click the photo below to watch my video reel.

Afterwards, we stopped by Anhelo (downtown Phoenix) for a cocktail. Loved the Diega Bonita with Mexican Diega Rosa gin, Belle de Brillet, lavender honey, and cava.

Chef-owner Ivan Jacobo also spoiled us with some new dishes from that night’s tasting menu (one of Arizona’s best dining experiences - I’ll be sharing photos from our upcoming dinner reservation): Spot prawn tart, pasta carbonara with mascarpone, crispy prosciutto, and egg yolks whipped with bacon fat, and his silky chawanmushi with lemon bubbles and caviar (which has since become a signature dish).

Wren & Wolf (downtown Phoenix). Earlier in the week, we had made reservations when WorldClass had let me know that they had flown in gorgeous Argentine truffles. Executive chef Ivan Gonzalez always creates something spectacular with their ingredients, and he hit it out of the park once again. We put our dinner choices in his hands and were spoiled with roasted bone marrow topped with A5 Wagyu and WorldClass caviar and black truffles, and Za’atar man’ouche stuffed with gouda and showered with more truffles.

For our main: His famous Beef Wellington (with WorldClass Devesa beef tenderloin) for two with whipped Parmesan potatoes and rich demi-glace. What a feast!

Sunday, August 6: Chilte (downtown Phoenix). I had been wanting to return to Chilte ever since this first visit, and the Compa Spirits dinner was the perfect excuse.

And what a dinner it was with a power team of three innovative talents - executive chef Lawrence Smith, guest mixologist Arlene Bean (MercBar, Highball), and Abel Arriaga, founder of Compa Spirits.

Compa Spirits seeks out boutique distillers and wineries throughout Mexico, and Arlene’s cocktail creations made with these artisanal spirits and paired with Lawrence’s creative dishes was an outstanding experience.

Friday, July 28: Renata’s Hearth at the Arizona Biltmore (Phoenix). Back to one of my favorites, this time with Meridith May and Bill Brandel, owners of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines. Stay tuned for my upcoming SOMM Journal feature with Director of Restaurants Timothy Ahrens.

Saturday, July 29: Tia Carmen at JW Marriott Desert Ridge (Phoenix). This was the launch of the new 'Tia and Chef' guest chef series with chef-owner Chef Angelo Sosa and I was thrilled that his inaugural guest was Chef Maria Mazon, executive chef and owner of BOCA Tacos y Tequila in Tucson, whom I first met in 2016.

Both of these talented chefs are also well-known TV personalities - Chef Maria competed on Bravo’s Top Chef and Food Network’s Chopped, and Chef Angelo was on Bravo’s Top Chef for three seasons and HBO Max’s Selena + Chef.

While the main event was Chef Maria’s special seven-course taco menu, our media group was invited to a pre-dinner cooking demo.

Tuesday, August 1: Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour (downtown Phoenix). Every year B&T releases a new book of cocktails, and this year’s was another winner. It’s no surprise that their book has landed on Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Top 10 "World’s Best Cocktail Menu" multiple times.

Here are some of my favorites (including the jerk chicken on the food menu, a partnership with Jamaican restaurant, The Breadfruit & Rum Bar):
Hasta La Vista, Berry!: “A lively fusion of Mezcal and Martini & Rossi's Riserva Speciale Bitter dances with Aperitivo Rosato, harmonized by a tangy triple berry shrub. Topped with sparkling prosecco and a splash of club soda."
You Shell Nut Pass: ”An elegant blend of VSOP cognac, house-blended sweet vermouth, and amontillado sherry, harmonized with zesty lemon and a delightful touch of pistachio adds an alluring twist.”
Bloomingdale: “A delicate fusion of Roku gin and elderflower liqueur harmoniously intertwine with crisp Rosé wine and a house dry vermouth blend. A dash of Peychaud bitters completes this elegant, floral masterpiece. Served chilled and up.”
Nibs & Bitters Negroni: “Sous vide cocoa nib mezcal pairs perfectly with the bitter warmth of Campari and a touch of sweet vermouth blend. It's like a fireside chat with an old friend.”
Split Decision: “A silken blend of Tullamore D.E.W. and Monkey Shoulder whiskies, enhanced by rich banana Madeira and aromatic cardamom bitters. Smooth vanilla buttermilk syrup brings it all together, creating a luxurious, spirited sipper.”
M.V.P. “A refined twist on a cult classic Miami Vice, this tempting fusion features a house rum blend, exotic spices, and strawberry tea. Pineapple, coconut milk, and lime intermingle for a refreshing, tropical experience, all clarified for a smooth finish.”

Wednesday, August 2: The Italian Daughter (North Scottsdale). We were invited to check out the new menu and it was a delicious reminder to return here more often. Thank you to Chef Vittorio Colafranceschi, who made one of the best Italian seafood dishes I have ever had - an off-menu special of Dungeness crab guazzetto.

Thursday, August 3: CRUjiente Tacos (Phoenix). As always, another great visit to this award-winning gem. Look for my Sonoran Scoop column in the next issue of SOMM Journal!

Friday, July 21: Sugar Bowl (Old Town Scottsdale). One of my assignments brought us to this historic ice cream parlor and restaurant that opened in 1958. Loved the vibe (and strawberry malt and ice cream sundae). Our first visit, but we’ll be back!

Another assignment for the Scottsdale Visitors Guide was a great excuse to visit Richard Allison, beverage director at The House Brasserie (Old Town Scottsdale).

Wrapping up my Friday, we had a fun time (as always!) at Frasher’s Tavern. Thank you to chef-owner George Frasher, who had invited us to a special wine dinner where he cooked up some Rao-inspired dishes that he learned when they took over the Tavern for Super Bowl 2023.

Tuesday, July 25: TEXAZ Grill (Phoenix). We love this Phoenix institution, famous for its chicken fried steak, and need to come back more often. I also always order the fried okra, crispy jumbo shrimp, catfish, and peach pie a la mode.

Wednesday, July 26: I love when assignments bring to me see some of my favorite talents, like sommelier Nick Padua at Course (Scottsdale). You can also read about Course in my SOMM Journal column.

Our last stop was The Mick Brasserie, one of our favorite Scottsdale spots, not only for the fantastic food, but for the wine program (be sure to ask beverage director Jeff to suggest pairings). We also picked up the wines we had purchased at their Argentina wine dinner.

Recommended dishes from their new summer menu: Chef’s Caviar Preparation of the Day with WorldClass Polanco Siberian Reserve caviar, creme fraiche with gribiche (hard-boiled eggs, cornichons, chives, and capers) with pickled shallots and grilled brioche.
